Upma is one of the healthiest breakfast options in India. This dish is basically from the Southern states of India. But, other states have adopted this simple, healthy and tasty breakfast. Thus, it comes to be known as Uppuma, Uppittu, Uppumavu, Uppindi, Kharabath, Upeet, and Rulanv.
The traditional recipe of Upma involves cooking roasted rava in water that has been flavoured with ghee or oil, urad dal (lentils), chana dal (husked chickpeas), onion, ginger and additional herbs and spices. Sugar can be added to a mildly sweet and savoury dish. Dry fruits can be added for extra richness.
Various varieties using different ingredients are evolving with time. Vermicelli(Semiya), Beaten rice(poha), Dalia(broken wheat) are very common nowadays. To make Upma more healthy, vegetables are added too.
The ingredients that are used for tempering, are the ones that both enhance and distinguish the flavour of your upma. These ingredients do vary from recipe to recipe, but usually include some savoury, nuttiness and also some sweetness.

This being the simplest of the Indian breakfast recipes, is ideal for those days when you are lazy for a well-detailed breakfast or for days when you wake up late and you need to make a quick breakfast. Upma is a lifesaver to me since sometimes I put off the alarm and go to a deep slumber, waking up to find only an hour left to pack the kids to school.

Healthy Dalia Upma
Ingredients
- 1 cup Dalia
- ¼ cup Beans cut into small rounds
- ¼ cup Carrot cut into small cubes
- ¼ cup Onion sliced thinly
- ⅓ cup Coconut scraped
- 3 Green Chilly cut into small pieces
- Salt to taste
Tempering
- 1 tsp Mustard
- ½ tsp Chana Dal
- ½ tsp Urad Dal
- 3 Dry Red Chilly cut into pieces
- 1 sprig Curry Leaves
Instructions
- Warm 1½ cup water in a pan, keep aside.
- In a thick bottom, dry fry Dalia for 5 minutes, on medium heat. Remove.
- Add oil to this heated pan.
- Add mustard and allow it to splutter.
- Next, add in the rest of the tempering ingredients. Fry for a while.
- Once the chana dal and urad dal are slightly brown. add in the vegetables.
- Add in salt to the vegetable for them to release water and get cooked.
- Once the vegetable are almost done, add the already warmed water and bring to a rolling boil.
- Lower heat. Slowly add the fried dalia into the water, stirring in between to avoid forming lumps.
- Once the water has been absorbed, add the scraped coconut and mix well. Cover with a lid and cook for five minutes.
- After 5 minutes, remove the lid and give a good stir and remove from heat.
- Dalia Upma is ready. Serve hot.
